Police Reveal Details of CCTV Evidence in Killing of Ntinda Car Dealer

Detectives investigating the death of businessman Anthony Mutinisa have revealed that the suspect, Hillary Byaruhanga, a security guard attached to Don World, is a suspected former rebel in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Byaruhanga, who, Police Spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, said was arrested in Kanungu district, fleeing with the deceased’s vehicle, has since been found to have spent some years in the DRC, but his actual occupation was not known.

During interrogation, Byaruhanga reportedly first told detectives that he killed Mutinisa under duress. He claimed that there were people who raided the workplace at Martyrs Way in Ntinda, placed a grenade on him and ordered him to shoot Mutinisa.

Byaruhanga, according to investigators, claimed that because he wanted to save his own life, he shot once at Mutinisa, and he died. “I shot him once, and he died when the grenade was put on my chest. After killing him, the people who had abducted me put me in his new vehicle and drove me up to Masaka, where they then directed me to drive towards DRC,” Byaruhanga reportedly said.

Nevertheless, Byaruhanga’s narrative has been watered down by the neighbour’s Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), which captured him alone loitering in the compound as Mutinisa was inside his office. A gun sound is then heard inside and out of panic. Byaruhanga moves out to check whether there was anyone around.

Byaruhanga then goes to the CCTV cameras and starts destroying them one by one. He later enters Mutinisa’s office and comes out with a bag suspected to have been containing the money his boss was counting.

Mutinisa reportedly balanced his accounts every Sunday afternoon and would, in most cases, be at work with the guard.

The CCTV cameras show him putting the bag and other items in Mutinisa’s vehicle, and he smartly drives out alone. Also, security cameras on the various roads show him driving the V8 Land Cruiser without anyone directing him. Detectives first listened to Byaruhanga’s narrative and then showed him the CCTV footage. Security now links Byaruhanga to a rebel group in DRC, where he was going to sell the stolen vehicle.

“We suspect that Byaruhanga was behind even the theft of the deceased’s new V8 Land Cruiser about two months ago, and he killed him to steal even this one, which he had just bought. It is clear that Byaruhanga had people already waiting for this vehicle, and he was in contact with them before and after killing Mutinisa,” detectives said.

Earlier on, Rusoke explained that Byaruhanga, who is aged 28, was arrested in Kanungu district with another man, Mark Akampa.

Rusoke said Byaruhanga was found with the deceased’s vehicle UA 769 BQ, which was recovered in Katwe Cell, Kihihi Town Council, by police in Kanungu. Mutinisa was the proprietor of Mutinisa Motors and Driving School located at Martyrs Way Road in Ntinda, Nakawa Division.
