The Police at Wandegeya, in partnership with the National Drug Authority (NDA), have arrested an individual identified as Ogwenga Nicholas and recovered illegal drugs in Nakasero that were being falsely marketed as treatment for hypertension.
The arrest followed an AI-generated video that featured Dr. Okello Emmy of the Uganda Heart Institute, purportedly advertising a drug called Hyper Guard.
Dr. Okello later lodged a complaint with the Police, clarifying that he had no knowledge of either the drug or the video.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the suspect, who was promoting the drug on social media. The team also conducted a search at a store in Nakasero, where they recovered over 2,000 small boxes of Hyper Guard and Man Power Tabs.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire The case file is being prepared and will be forwarded to the Resident State Attorney for perusal and legal advice.
The suspect remains detained at Wandegeya Police Station, he adds.
Owoyesigyire also cautioned the public against buying or using drugs from unlicensed dealers and urged them to always seek medication through authorized health facilities and pharmacies.
