Police in Luwero District have launched a manhunt for the driver of a bus that collided head-on with a truck, killing three members of one family.
The fatal crash occurred last evening at around 9:00 p.m. near the weighbridge station at Nakkazi in Luwero Town Council, along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.
The deceased have been identified as Moses Nyongo, his wife Swabura Nakanyike, and their two-week-old baby, Fazil Kintu. They were residents of Kiyenje zone in Luwero town council.
According to police, the accident involved a red and white Yutong bus operated by ECO Company, registration number SSD 251Z, which was traveling from Gulu to Kampala.
The bus reportedly attempted to overtake three vehicles in a reckless maneuver and veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with a white Mitsubishi Canter truck, registration UAV 920Q. All three occupants in the truck died.
The bus overturned into a roadside trench, leaving several passengers with injuries ranging from critical to minor.
Savannah Region Police Spokesperson, Sam Twiineamazima, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the bus driver fled after the crash.
Twiineamazima said police officers visited the scene, secured the vehicles, and transported 19 injured passengers to Luwero General Hospital.
The bodies of the deceased, he says, were also taken to the hospital mortuary. He added that investigations into the cause of the accident were ongoing. He urged the public to share any information that could lead to the arrest of the fugitive driver to face justice for reckless driving.
Police have warned motorists against reckless driving, especially at night and on busy highways such as Kampala–Gulu.
In the latest development, Twiineamazima says the injured have been discharged.
Fatal road accidents remain an issue along the Kampala-Gulu highway.
