The National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate for Oyam North Constituency, David Galla Okullu, has withdrawn from the parliamentary race.
Okullu announced his decision at Aleka Sub-county, saying his withdrawal was aimed at promoting service delivery and development in Oyam District, which he believes can best be achieved through cooperation with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
He said that by stepping aside, he would throw his full support behind the NRM flag bearer, Willy Omodo Omodo, whom he described as a capable leader with the vision to unite the people of Oyam North. Okullu pledged to mobilise his supporters to rally behind Omodo.
Okullu’s withdrawal brings to two the number of parliamentary candidates who have exited races in Oyam District. The first was Josephine Alice Etit Onyanga of the Democratic Party (DP), who had been contesting for Oyam District Woman MP but dropped out last year, citing lack of financial support from her party.
Welcoming Okullu’s decision, Willy Omodo Omodo said he would work closely with him to mobilise support for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and all NRM candidates in the district.Omodo said the collaboration would strengthen the party’s grassroots mobilisation and ensure that government development programmes effectively reach the people of Oyam North.
Meanwhile, Bosco Onyik Ogwal, the NRM Chairperson for Oyam District, praised Okullu for withdrawing from the race and aligning with the ruling party. Onyik said the district NRM leadership is working tirelessly to ensure the party secures all elective positions in the district during the 2026 general elections.
According to the Electoral Commission, seven candidates were nominated to contest for the Oyam North parliamentary seat. They include the incumbent MP Eunice Apio Otuku of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), Willy Omodo Omodo of the NRM, David Galla Okullu of NUP, and Fredy Newton Okello of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
The independents are Samuel Engola Okello, son of the late Oyam North MP Charles Okello Engola, Chrispus Ayena Odongo, and Ronald Roy Kaka. The Electoral Commission roadmap shows that candidates countrywide have until January 13 to conclude their campaigns, ahead of the general elections scheduled for January 15, 2026.
