Police have detained the acting chairman of the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA), Issa Sekito, amid growing tension in downtown Kampala following renewed clashes between traders and security personnel.
Sekito was arrested on Thursday by officers at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala to assist in investigations into alleged incitement and assault on police officers.
Police said his statement is yet to be recorded, and appropriate charges will be preferred against him.
The arrest comes a day after thirteen traders were taken into custody for allegedly inciting violence and attacking police officers who were on lawful duty. The case file has since been forwarded to the Resident State Attorney for perusal and legal advice.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the developments, warning that security agencies will not tolerate acts that threaten public order.
“We continue to urge members of the public to remain calm and desist from acts that may incite violence or threaten the safety of others, particularly those who have chosen to open their shops and continue with normal business in the city centre,” Owoyesigyire stated.
He added that police will maintain a visible presence within the city centre to deter illegal activities and ensure law and order prevail.
