Joan Kagezi Murder Suspect Accuses Prosecutor of Torture in Safe House

An inmate formerly attached to the Police Flying Squad,  Abdunoor Ssemujju aka Minaana has accused a State Prosecutor of torturing him while being held in a police safe house.

Minaana made the allegations before the Nakawa court Magistrate Andrew Katurubuki during a routine  appearance alongside former senior police officer, Nixon Agasiirwe.

The pair is  facing charges in connection with the murder of former Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Joan Kagezi in 2015.

Inorder to drive his point home, Minaana removed his shirt attempting to show scars he allegedly sustained  when Chief State Attornye Richard Birivumbuka allegedly tortured him during his detention in a safe house.

Minana claims the  scars  are  still visible on his back further insisting that the torture was severe and that the wounds had not yet healed.

Birivumbuka however asked the Magistrate to adjourn the matter, saying investigations into the case were nearly complete, court granted the request and set the next appearance for January 7, 2026.

However, shortly after the adjournment, drama unfolded as Minaana continued to make loud accusations even from the holding area, briefly interrupting other court proceedings. He was restrained by prison warders and court security.

Meanwhile, defence lawyer Michael Akampurira has  protested what he called the continued unlawful detention of his clients . He argued that Agasiirwe and his co-accused have spent an unreasonably long time on remand without being committed to the High Court for trial.

Akampurira faulted the prosecution for what he described as repeated and unfulfilled promises to complete investigations. He said the prolonged detention violates the constitutional right to a fair and speedy trial.

The defence lawyer  insists his clients want the matter committed to the High Court so that their trial can formally begin.
