Compensation to War Debt Claimants Stands at UGX 121 bn – Justice Ministry

The ministry of justice says it has so far compensated over 24,000 war debt claimants with a total of 121.3 bn shillings in the greater north.

Close to 4000 claimants have been compensated in Acholi subregion with a total of Ugx 33.bn while slightly over 10,000 claimants have been compensated in Lango subregion with 39.2 bn.

In the Teso subregion a total of UGX 48.7 bn was used to compensate for 10,100 claimants.

The compensation goes to war affected households in Teso, lango, Acholi and west Nile veterans for their lost cattle.

According to the permanent secretary ministry of justice Robert Kasande this is intended to improve the lives and livelihoods of war affected households.

Meanwhile Kasande says the exercise has not been smooth because of the data that was received.

“Some claimants delay to give us the right documentation. As you know this loss happened way back in 1980s so some of the claimants have died and they have their descendants, bringing in the right documents from court, this takes some time.” He noted.

He revealed that some payments are bouncing because of inaccuracies of bank accounts.
