Burora Trial for Insulting Speaker Among Set for May as Settlement Talks Collapse

The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered prosecution to present its witnesses in a hate speech case against the former Deputy Resident City Commissioner(RCC)  Herbert Anderson Burora.

The order comes after Burora and the Speaker Anita Among failed to settle their differences out of court.

Chief Magistrate, Ronald Kayizzi has this morning been prompted to fix the case for hearing for 7th/ May .

Burora has informed Kayizzi that he did his part but the negotiations with the speaker failed and that court can go ahead and fix the trial.

Burora, is facing six counts of hate speech and spreading malicious communication, specifically for sharing information about Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among that portrayed her as a torturer, murderer, kidnapper, and corrupt individual.

Prosecution states that between March 2024 and June 2024 in the areas of Kampala District or thereabout while using  a computer via his  X handle “@harderHB”,  Burora shared the said  information which was  likely to ridicule, demean and promote hostility against Anita Annet Among.

His posts gained traction among online users, sparking heated debates and discussions regarding the conduct of high-profile government officials.

While some viewed his remarks as an exercise of free speech, others criticized them as reckless and defamatory.

Burora has since denied the charges
