The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, has criticized people for reclaiming land donated to the church by their families.
Kaziimba said that the grandchildren are misinterpreting the decision of the well-wishers to claim part of the land.
He made the remarks in a sermon during the centenary celebration of the existence of the church in Palabek, held at Dicwinyi Primary School in Palabek Kal Town Council, Lamwo district on Sunday.
Archbishop Kaziimba expressed concern about the increasing trend, where families of those who generously donated land to the church are now seeking to repossess it. He noted that the grandparents of these individuals had given the land to the church with open and clean hearts, without expecting anything in return.
“It is disturbing to see the grandchildren of these benefactors trying to take back the land, claiming they were not consulted,” Archbishop Kaziimba said. “Most of these individuals were not even born when their grandparents donated the land to the church.”
He further revealed that some of these grandsons reclaiming church land are politicians who should have instead been the people to refrain from such acts.
“Unfortunately, some of these individuals are politicians who should be setting a good example, but instead, they are leading the charge in reclaiming church land,” Archbishop Kaziimba said. “This is not only unacceptable but also a betrayal of the trust and generosity of their grandparents.”
The Archbishop warned that those involved in reclaiming church land are inviting a “permanent curse” upon their families. He urged them to refrain from such actions and instead support the church’s activities, such as education and healthcare.
“Education is the key to success in this world,” Archbishop Kaziimba emphasized. “I call upon parents to ensure that their children receive a good education, and I urge individuals to support the church’s initiatives in education, healthcare, and other areas.”
The Church of Uganda is currently facing challenges in several districts, where families are disputing land ownership and seeking to reclaim property donated to the church.
