Vendors Given 2 Weeks To Vacate The City

The Ministry of Kampala has issued a two-week ultimatum for illegal street vendors, taxi operators, and boda boda riders in the city to vacate their positions. This announcement was made by the Minister of Kampala, Hajat Minsa Kabanda, while presenting new rules and guidelines to ensure cleanliness and order in Kampala.

The guidelines require that street vendors operating illegally voluntarily leave their locations, taxi operators without designated stages move to parks, and boda boda riders without a designated stage obtain one.

Speaking at a media center in Kampala today, Minister Minsa Kabanda stated that the government has listened to concerns and is now moving forward with the enforcement of trade order. She warned that anyone who continues illegal trading after the eviction will be arrested and prosecuted.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of KCCA, Benon Kigenyi, announced that spaces have been made available in designated markets, such as Usafi, Busega, and Wandegeya. The KCCA is also investing in infrastructure to ensure that business can continue safely, fairly, and profitably in compliance with the new directives.

Kigenyi further explained that KCCA has launched a two-week sensitization campaign, beginning today, to encourage voluntary compliance from trader associations, taxi operators, and boda boda management regarding the designated trade and transport zones.

“The aim is to provide guidance, support, and information to ensure that traders operate safely and within the law,” he stated. KCCA calls on all traders, transport operators, and residents to cooperate during this period, as it benefits everyone, protects livelihoods, ensures safe movement, and maintains the city’s reputation as Uganda’s capital.
