Five more NUP supporters have been charged and remanded to Luzira prison by the Kawempe chief Magistrates with offences relating to a millitary drilling/ parade that was conducted at NUP Headquarters in Kavule on 12th February 2025.
The five are , Tasi Calvin aka Bobi Giant , Serunkuuma Edwin aka Eddie King Kabenja and Lukenge Sharif. Others are Nyanzi Yasin and Kaweesi Tonny.
The 5 now join Edward Sebuufu aka Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi who were earlier charged with the same offence and remanded to Luzira prison.
Sebuufu and Kivumbi have also been brought back to court amidst heavy deployment from security which also blocked some of thier relatives.
The two were later called to the Dock from where prosecution represented by chief state Attorney Sharon Nambuya informed court of an amended charge sheet to introduce the five.
Consquently, Grade one magistrate Agumasiimwe Damalie read the four fresh charges to the suspects.
Prosecution states that on February 12, 2025, at the NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule, Wandegeya, Kawempe Division, the seven, together with others still at large, attended a meeting or assembly of persons held without the permission of the Minister.
Prosecution adds that the said gathering was allegedly aimed at training or drilling participants in military exercises, movements, and evolutions, contrary to Section 45(1)(b) of the Penal Code Act.
In a other counts, the seven are accused of conspiring to commit a felony. Court has heard that on the same day and at the same venue, they agreed with others to engage in unlawful drilling, an offence.
The accused have denied the charges and proceeded to apply to be released on bail after presenting their relatives and friends as surities.
However prosecution informed court they were not ready to respond to the accused’s bail application and asked for one month to organise themselves noting that they are overloaded with other cases, and need to carry out research and file affidavits in response.
The prosecution further stated that more suspects are still at large and it needs ample time to hunt for them and make arrests.
Putting in consideration the rights of suspects and the heavy work load of the DPP and court , Magistrate Agumaasiimwe has adjourned the case to the 29th September for the state to reply to the bail application.
