An 18-year-old girl has been arrested in Nansana for dumping her newborn baby in a pit latrine.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, has identified the suspect as Moreen Ainembabazi, a maid at the home of Praise Niwagaba, a resident of Nansana East zone in Nansana municipality, Wakiso district.
The incident occurred on Monday when Niwagaba found Ainembabazi in the pit latrine room, covered in bloodstains. A baby was heard crying from inside the pit latrine which prompted her to sound an alarm.
The police were informed, and a team of firefighters intervened and rescued the baby from the pit latrine. Fortunately, the baby was found alive.
According to Onyango, a case of attempted infanticide has been registered at Nansana Police Station, and investigations are underway. Onyango stated that the police intend to conduct thorough interviews with Ainembabazi to understand her motivations and also plan to question the baby’s father as part of the ongoing investigation.
The incident is not an isolated case, as similar incidents have occurred in Kampala metropolitan areas. For instance, in Kasangati Town Council, a 25-year-old mother abandoned her newborn baby in a pit latrine last year.
Sarah Nanteza, a resident of Nabweru, also killed her one-day-old baby and disposed of the body in a latrine.
