On the heels of the recent release of the 2023 UACE results by the Uganda National Examination Board, many students are at a crossroads, uncertain about their next steps towards university education. The choice between repeating S6 or settling for a course that doesn’t align with their dreams looms large for those whose grades may not meet the typical A’ Level requirements.
Moreover, individuals with Grade III teaching qualifications equivalent to A’ Level often face roadblocks in pursuing bachelor’s level programs. Similarly, professionals in fields like nursing, Midwifery, Clinical officers and welding, as well as foreigners residing in Uganda without A’ Level qualifications from their home countries, encounter challenges accessing higher education.

Recognizing these obstacles and the pressing need for alternative pathways to tertiary education, the Uganda National Council for Higher Education launched a groundbreaking solution: the Higher Certificate in Education (HEC)/bridging courses.
Under the guidance of Martha Tusabe, the academic registrar at Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute (ECUREI), located in Mengo Hospital, the HEC program offers bridging courses tailored to two distinct tracks:
Biological Sciences Track: Ideal for aspiring doctors, nurses, and biotechnologists, this track provides a robust foundation in subjects like Chemistry and Biology, essential for success in health-related fields.
Physical Sciences Track: Tailored for future engineers and technical professionals, this track focuses on subjects like Physics and Mathematics, equipping students with the necessary skills for engineering and technical careers.
Martha emphasizes that ECUREI offers flexible delivery formats for its bridging courses, including online, physical classes, and hybrid options, to accommodate various student needs and preferences. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate of achievement, bolstering their university applications and demonstrating their proactive commitment to academic advancement.
