The member of parliament for Nyendo Mukungwe Mathias Mpuuga has unveiled plans to introduce several constitutional amendments starting next week.

Mpuuga proposes amendments to have the vice president with executive powers as a running mate with the president but chosen from another region where the president does nothail from.

Other proposals include reducing the size of parliament, having the Ugandans in diaspora vote at polling stations at Uganda’s embassies on voting day and return of presidential term limits.

He also wants the district returning officer to declare both the results of the president and the members of parliament and then transmit them to the chairperson of the electoral commission.

He is in addition proposing to have an amendment where any voter can petition the court to challenge the presidential election results to cure the problem where the candidates are put under house arrest when are supposed to challenge results.

Meanwhile, Mpuuga has declined calls from the DP block to front him for presidency in the forthcoming General Elections

Mpuuga notes that Uganda’s current political terrain requires a lot of amendments in the electoral laws to draw a fair and balanced ground if a genuine election is to happen

The DP block team yesterday called on Mpuuga to warm-up for a presidential race with their support.
