Police and Uganda Peoples’ Defense Force in Nakasongola district have deployed heavily to block the mobilisation tour of Robert Kyagulanyi the President of National Unity Platform.
Kyagulanyi was expected on Friday afternoon at Migyera town to mobilise support from the area. Kyagulanyi was supposed to address supporters at Migeera town market grounds.
The NUP Organizing Team led by Faridah Nabatanzi the NUP Head of Mobilisation in Buganda on Friday morning embarked on assembling a Public Address address system and clearing the grounds to host Kyagulanyi only for the policemen to surround them.
The policemen and soldiers of UPDF commanded by Stephen Niragire instructed the team to stop and immediately vacate the grounds saying they had got instructions from the Inspector General of Police to block the tour.
Nabatanzi tried to protest the order in vain and immediately the policemen directed the sound technicians to dismantle the Public Address system.
Police backed by UPDF also embarked on chasing the supporters from the grounds.
Nabatanzi said the order came as a surprise since they had agreed to the terms of the Police including not holding processions or making stopovers along the Kampala – Gulu highway.
Nabatanzi condemned the Police but the interview was stopped before Niragire ordered the media to cut it short and leave the venue.
Niragire declined to comment on the matter and referred the journalists to Savannah Police Spokesperson Sam Twineamazima who also said he doesn’t have details on the matter.
Policemen and UPDF soldiers are monitoring the town council to block any meeting of NUP supporters.
At the Wabigalo trading center Police have erected blocker tyre barriers to deny Kyagulanyi and his supporters access to Nakasongola town council.
This is the second time Kyagulanyi’s is blocked in Migyera town.
In 2020, Police blocked Kyagulanyi from accessing local hotels, forcing him to spend the night in his car on the roadside.
