Mps have opposed the move by Uganda revenue authority to obtain information for all Ugandans who have accounts in commercial banks.

Last week a letter from URA leaked showing that the authority had directed banks to submit account details all its customers detailing how much had been deposited and withdrawn from these accounts since 2016 to date.

The banks through their association Uganda banks association opposed the move and wrote to bank of Uganda requesting guidance. The masaka municipality mp Mathias Mpuuga says that they cannot allow URA to access customer’s information as this will harm the fragile banking sector as many people are yet to trust banks with their money.

The Nakaseke south mp Luttamaguzi Semakula says that banks have a responsibility to protect customer’s information and they will not allow URA to access their records in the name of collecting tax.

The Kitgum municipality mp Beatrice Anywar says that they can not allow URA to access such information as they can not be sure that their privacy will be protected saying that unscrupulous people can access this information and use it to put their lives in danger.
