Kaweesi Murder Suspects Remanded Again
Eight suspects charged with the murder of former Police Spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi have been remanded for the third time despite being granted bail.
The suspects; Abdul-Rashid Mbaziira alias Muhammed Buyondo, Aramanzani Noordin Higenyi alias Taata Abdullazack, Yusuf Mugerwa alias Wilson, Bruhan Balyejusa alias Jimmy Masiga Ogutu. Others are; Joshua Magezi Kyambadde alias Abdu Rahman, Jibril Kalyango alias Abu Aisha, Yusuf Siraje Nyanzi alias Jimmy Ssentamu and Shafik Kasujja.
On Thursday, the Assistant Court Registrar at the International Crimes Division (ICD) Esther Nansambu told court that the suspects were not going to regain their freedom because they had not yet fulfilled their bail terms.
On March, 19th, 2019, Justice Lydia Mugambe granted the suspects a non-cash bail of 150 million shillings and 250 million also non-cash for their sureties.
Justice Mugambe among other conditions asked them to verify their Identification Cards with NIRA but the suspects who allege that the cards were confiscated by the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence have since had difficult times.
On March, 29th, 2019, the Deputy Registrar of ICD Harriet Nalukwago Ssali wrote to NIRA Director asking them to verify the suspects’ National Identification Cards.
Nansambu who had sat in for Justice Lydia Mugambe noted that the eight couldn’t sign their bond papers because court had not yet received feedback from NIRA.
The suspects through their lawyer Anthony Wameli requested court to adjourn the case to May, 8th.
State Prosecutors Lillian Omar Alum and Jacqueline Okwi told court that they didn’t have objections to the adjournment.
